Tasting - "Fetzer Gewurztraminer"

Name: Fetzer
Variety: Gewurztraminer
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2014
Regular Price: $12
Sale Price: $8.95

Winery Notes:
87 – Wine Enthusiast A rainy minerality on the nose of this sweet wine manages to cut through the sugared oranges, honeysuckle and ripe, tropical white fleshed fruit, from peach to cherimoya. The palate is full of honeyed apples, white peach and pineapple, but the decent acidity and chalky element stops it short of treacly.

My review:
This wine had a round aroma that was reminiscent of stone fruit, specifically apricot. It was slightly bubbly and smooth. It tasted fruity, like an overripe pear. This wine was tasted without food.

"The 2015 Maipe Malbec is another 100% Malbec, with a deep purple color and a style similar to the Lexicon, with chocolaty, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, as well as touches of licorice and earth. It is delicious, soft and round." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (March 2016), 87 pts - Excellent Wine Values for Under $25

Winery Notes:
A pretty, floral wine, with a rose petal note underscoring the rich pomegranate and sweet plum flavors. The fresh acidity is balanced, and a light spice note lingers on the finish.

My review:
This wine was red and smelled like steak, or other red meat. It had a dull (as opposed to sharp) smell. It tasted dry, yet still soft and smooth at the beginning, and harsher towards the end. This wine was tasted without food.

Tasting - "Mapreco Vinho Verde Rose"

Name: Mapreco
Variety: Vinho Verde Rose
Region: Vinho Verde
Country: Portugal
Year: 2015
Regular Price: $10
Sale Price: $7.95

Winery Notes:
The cherry color reveals a slightly fizzy wine that is a very fruitful rosé made from the traditional vinho verde white grapes. Adding a splash of red to offer flavors with notes of strawberry, cherry and berries. A delightful twist on the original.

My review:
This clearish-pinkish wine had a smell reminiscent of an art classroom. While it was not a repulsive smell, it was not a smell I would generally associate with food, such as a wet paint smell. The taste was similar, also with a hint of sour apple. This wine was tasted without food.

Tasting - "Mars & Venus Chardonnay"

Name: Mars & Venus
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2014
Price: $5.95

Winery Notes:
A very nice value Chardonnay that comfortably over-delivers vs. its modest price tag. No oak here, just bushels of clean, crisp, Chardonnay apple and stone fruit with a hint of caramelized pineapple. Juicy and clean, this is a mid-weight white that's just perfect for parties or weeknight sipping.

My review:
This clear wine had hints of dark cherry and rubarb, reminiscent of a berry pie. It tasted less sweet than the smell suggested. The taste was closer to a sour apple taste than berries. This wine was tasted without food.

Region: Campagna
Country: Italy
Year: 2013

Produced in the Campania region of Italy, this Aglianico has delicious black fruit flavors with hints of licorice, volcanic soil and tar notes. Classic in nature, yet in a lighter, more crowd-pleasing style, the Carraia is made of the ancient Aglianico grape. This black grape originated in Greece and today is widely grown in Basilicata and Campania.

My review:
This wine was brownish red in color, and smelled of plum and black cherry. The wine had a very strong taste reminiscent of a burnt, smokey taste. The wine was very dry and had an aftertaste similar to the aftertaste of cheese. I did not taste this wine with food, and have no desire to taste this wine again (with or without food).

My review:
This wine was a ruby red color, with a smell reminiscent of fake, artificially created scent. The scent got better the more I smelled the wine, and morphed into a wet smell. The taste was bitter, dry, and tasted like plum. This wine was tasted without food.

A juicy palate packed with plum and raspberry is carried by a creamy texture that’s rather toasty in terms of flavor. The finish is round, full and chocolaty.

My review:
This wine was deep red in color, and also smelled like generic red wine. It had a fuller body than other wines I tasted at the Vintage Cellar this week, and also had sour/tart undertones. It had a tannic mouthfeel that made it clear that the wine was dry. This wine was tasted without food.

Dinner - Homemade with Family (Spain)

Over spring break, I made a three course wine dinner with my mom, dad, sister, and brother-in-law.  We first decided on each course, and then decided on a wine pairing to go with it.  The first course was crustini with goat cheese and Spanish cured meat, paired with 2014 Lost Creek Chardonnay.  The second course was paella paired with 2015 Reserva Rose Wine.  The third and final course was a molten chocolate cake, paired with 2013 Plungerhead Zinfandel.

When tasted without food, the first wine, the chardonnay, had a light citrus and pear smell.  It was almost clear in color, with a very light yeast or butter taste.  The mouthfeel was hot and smooth, and not dry.  The strong legs of the wine indicated high residual sugar, which agreed with my feeling that it was on the sweeter side.  When paired with the crustini, the wine smelled sweeter.  Along with increased acidity, the wine tasted more buttery, less fruity, and cooler.

Before eating the main course, I tasted the rose.  Without food, it smelled of raspberry or cherry and had weaker legs.  It tasted fruitier, sweeter, and less dry than I was expecting.  It reminded me of an acidic fruit punch.  When paired with the paella,  the wine got more acidic and less fruity.  Some family members were not in agreement, mainly my sister and dad, and felt as though the wine got more fruity.  Most agreed that the food gave the wine more burn.

The zinfandel had strong legs, was deep red in color, and had what can best be described as a "red wine" smell.  It tasted strongly of campfire, and had a dry mouthfeel.  Once paired with the very sweet molten chocolate cake, the wine got significantly more acidic, and the campfire smell was brought out.  My dad felt that this wine paired very well with the cake, whereas my mom felt that it "kills the chocolate cake."

I am unsure whether I felt that any of these wines truly paired with the food.  I enjoyed the chardonnay, whereas I was definitely not a fan of the zinfandel, but I don't believe that those opinions had anything to do with the food pairings.  I don't think that my wine pallet is developed enough to recognize the flavors in wines that I like, let alone to pair them with foods that I like, but I feel that this dinner was a decent attempt.  I see how these wines pair better with the food than others, but they did not make me enjoy the food any more or less than I would normally.

Winery Notes:
An intense red color. Aromas of violet and blackcurrant enriched by hints of liquorice and black pepper. In the mouth it is full, round, slightly tannic and with a spicy note on the finish.

My review:
This red wine had a strong yeast, butter, and vinegar scent. It tasted of campfire, but that was the only layer I noticed. This wine had a very flat taste. I did not enjoy this wine all, and it was tasted on its own, without food.
